The Neighborhood

Hillside living, minutes from everything.

Where it is

Eastern San Diego, bordering San Carlos, Allied Gardens, the College Area, Grantville and the City of La Mesa. Lake Murray and San Diego State University sit right alongside. Part of the Navajo community planning area and City Council District 7.

The homes

Developed from the 1950s through the 1970s. Expect single-story ranches, split-levels and mid-century modern designs, plus custom and Spanish-influenced homes — many on hillsides with views toward Lake Murray, Cowles Mountain and the surrounding canyons.

The feel

Quiet, residential and tight-knit. Del Cerro means “of the hill” in Spanish, and the terrain shapes everything: winding streets, dramatic lots and long views. Active civic groups include the Del Cerro Action Council and Navajo Community Planners.

Hearst Elementary (K–5)

Phoebe A. Hearst Elementary is right on Del Cerro Boulevard, part of San Diego Unified and known for active parent involvement.

Lewis Middle School (6–8)

The middle school commonly associated with the neighborhood, also in San Diego Unified.

Patrick Henry High (9–12)

The neighborhood high school in San Diego Unified. San Diego State University is next door for college-town energy.

School assignment depends on the specific address and can change — always confirm with San Diego Unified before making a decision.

Parks & Outdoors

Trails, water and open space at the doorstep.

Lake Murray

A 3-mile-plus path for walking, jogging and biking around the reservoir, with fishing for bass and trout, kayaking and a community playground.

Mission Trails Regional Park

One of the largest urban parks in the country, reaching the neighborhood’s edge — Cowles Mountain, Kwaay Paay Peak, Fortuna Mountain and Oak Canyon Trail.

Del Cerro Park

At Del Cerro Boulevard and Marne Avenue — playgrounds, picnic areas and sports space, with a community pool and tennis courts (membership details vary).

Princess Del Cerro Park & Navajo Canyon

A neighborhood park with play structures and shade, plus hiking and canyon trails on the west side of the community.

Eat, Drink & Shop

Local favorites.

KnB Bistro & Bottle Shop

Bottle shop, brewery and bistro — elevated pub fare, soups, sandwiches and wine tastings.

Del’s Hideout

Texas-style barbecue and burgers, from the Cohn Restaurant Group.

Windmill Farms Community Market

Independent neighborhood grocer on Del Cerro Boulevard — fresh produce, natural and organic foods, local goods.

La Torta Café

Authentic Mexican tortas on College Avenue.

Test Kitchen Eatery & Workspace

Inventive, ever-changing lunch menu next door in Grantville.

Hours and menus change — check before you go. Prem’s own list of favorites is coming.

Getting Around

Central, without the noise.

Freeway access

Interstate 8 connects Del Cerro to central San Diego, roughly 10 to 15 miles from downtown and the airport.

Transit & campus

MTS bus service, and San Diego State University is minutes away.

Healthcare nearby

Kaiser Permanente’s Zion Medical Center is close, along with everyday services in Grantville and Allied Gardens.

The neighborhood’s hillside terrain is fire-prone canyon country — ask about defensible space, insurance and slope considerations on any home you’re serious about.
