La Mesa — “the Jewel of the Hills.”

Its own city since 1912, just east of San Diego: a walkable village on La Mesa Boulevard, four trolley stops, hillside streets climbing toward Mount Helix, and an Oktoberfest that draws a couple hundred thousand people.

The City

A small city with a real downtown.

Where it is

Nine square miles east of San Diego, bordered by the city of San Diego to the west and north, El Cajon to the east, and Spring Valley and Lemon Grove to the south. Del Cerro is right next door.

The Village

Downtown La Mesa runs along La Mesa Boulevard: independent shops, restaurants and bars, the farmers market and most of the city’s big events, with a trolley station a block away.

The homes

Older bungalows and Spanish homes near the Village, mid-century ranches across the middle of town, and larger view homes on the slopes toward Mount Helix and around Lake Murray.

Schools

Two districts, by grade.

La Mesa-Spring Valley School District

Elementary and middle schools for most of the city.

Grossmont Union High School District

High schools including Grossmont High and Helix High.

Some La Mesa-addressed homes sit in other districts, and some sit outside the city limits entirely. Confirm the district for the exact address before you decide.
